Jane Taylor, a 17-year veteran of running youth programs, will become director of Girls Inc. on Friday, replacing Cynthia Owens.
Taylor was hired by Girls Inc. in June to help run some of the activities and write grants. Owens has been director for 18 months. She will become a salesperson for BMG Metals in Chesapeake, Va.
``Girls Inc. has gone through a lot of directors in recent years, but I think this is the last one for a long time,'' Owens said of Taylor.
Taylor praised the efforts of Owens, especially in improving the Girls Inc. meeting place on Road Street.
``It has improved 100 percent,'' Taylor said.
Up to 45 girls attend the club from 2:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays and on Saturday excursions.
The girls participate in such activities as cooking, sewing, sports, homework help, swimming, sign language lessons and camping. Taylor said she wants to incorporate more of the programs sponsored by the national Girls Inc.
``A lot of them don't know what interests they have until we start training them in some of these skills,'' Taylor said.
Taylor worked at the Elizabeth City Boys and Girls Club for 10 years until May. She had worked at other youth organizations before that.
