Man, 36, robbed

and shot to death

outside apartment

A 36-year-old man was robbed and shot to death outside a Bonnevilla apartment early Wednesday morning.

Police were called to the area about 1:45 a.m. Wednesday and found the victim, William Westbrook III of the 2200 block of South St. He was taken to Portsmouth General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Westbrook's father said his son lived with him and that he was visiting a friend who lives in the apartments when he was killed.

Police arrested Carlton Nelson Jr., 18, of the 1200 block of Darren Drive, and charged him with murder, robbery, shooting into an occupied dwelling and two counts of use of a firearm.

A house was hit by gunfire during the shooting.

Nelson is being held in the Portsmouth City Jail without bond. Virginia Beach

Two teens arrested in

string of four robberies

Two teen-agers - one just 13 years old - have been arrested after an alleged crime spree in which shots were fired but no one hit in each of four armed robberies.

The names of the youths were being withheld because of their ages. They were being held at the Tidewater Detention Home pending court hearings.

The pair were arrested Tuesday about 6:30 p.m. when Lt. Jack Collins of the Second Precinct spotted a stolen car they were in at 17th Street and Pacific Avenue.

They were arrested without incident, and police recovered a large-caliber handgun.

Police said the charges against the teens stem from the robberies of three pizza delivery drivers and a man, his wife and his small daughter, all between Sept. 17 and Sept. 28.

The 13-year-old is charged with one count each of robbery and of attempted robbery, two counts of vehicle theft, three counts of conspiracy to commit robbery, and four counts each of attempted malicious wounding and using a gun while committing a felony. The 17-year-old is charged with all those counts plus a third count of car theft.

Police seek information

in abduction and robbery

Police have released a sketch of a suspect in the abduction and armed robbery of a 26-year-old woman.

Maria Balmaceda told police she was in the parking lot of Hill's Department Store in the 2800 block of Virginia Beach Blvd. about 10 a.m. Monday when she was abducted at gunpoint.

She said a man driving an older model, grey Oldsmobile approached her and displayed a handgun. He ordered her into the car, and she complied.

The man then drove to the Richmond area, at times forcing the woman to ride in the car's trunk.

He also demanded and was given the woman's money.

The woman was dropped off in Henrico County, and called police.

The suspect is described as white, in his mid 30s, 5 feet 10 inches tall and about 130 pounds. He had shoulder-length straight brown hair, green eyes, a full beard and moustache, and crooked, discolored teeth. He was wearing a red-and-white baseball cap, a red-and-gray plaid shirt, a jean jacket, and light, faded jeans. He was armed with a small-caliber handgun.

The car is described as dirty light grey with four doors and a tan interior. It had a dent on the passenger-side door.
