MILESTONES

CHESAPEAKE

Lillie M. ``Lil'' Hart, the clerk of Chesapeake Circuit Court, has been re-elected treasurer of the Virginia Court Clerks' Association.

The election was held during the association's annual convention in Charlottesville on Sept. 12-14.

This is Hart's fourth annual term as treasurer of the organization. She was first appointed Chesapeake's clerk in 1984 and was re-elected in November of that year to a partial term, and in 1987 and 1995 to full eight-year terms.

Hayden F. Horney, the clerk of Circuit Court of Wythe County, was elected president.

Doris Lee Gribble of the 800 block of Harway Ave., Chesapeake, has been inducted into the International Society of Poetry as a ``distinguished member.''

At the seventh annual symposium and convention in Washington, D.C., in August, Gribble was presented the International Poet of Merit plaque and the Bronze Poet of Merit medallion for her composition, ``My Heart's Treasure Chest,'' which was published this year in the National Library of Poetry anthology, ``A Moment To Reflect.''

Gribble, 63, is a retired executive secretary with Cofer's Interior Design in Norfolk.

NORFOLK

Mary L. Brown has been named the 1997-98 Outstanding School Guard by the Pilot Club of Norfolk.

A member of the Norfolk Police Department's School Crossing Guard Unit since 1947, Brown has spent the majority of her years helping children (and later their children) walk safely to Oceanair Elementary School.

Cpl. J.H. Richards, supervisor of school crossing guards for the police department, nominated Brown for the award. In his letter of recommendation, Richards said the children, parents and staff of Oceanair Elementary School say ``safety is number one with her and she always keeps a high level of order and discipline at her corner.''

He nominated her, he said, because of her professionalism, dedication to duty, love and concern for others, and her outstanding reputation for reliability.

PORTSMOUTH

Dewey H. ``Rock'' Bell III, Portsmouth's assistant city engineer, was honored this week as the City Employee of the Year by the Merrimac Kiwanis Club.

Bell, who has worked for the city for 12 years, is responsible for the day-to-day management of many projects, is credited with computerizing the city's engineering department and has been cited for training his staff to adapt its office functions to new computers.

He has managed the construction of the Churchland High School that opened in 1992 and currently the new I.C. Norcom High School, which is nearing completion.

On the $21 million Churchland project, Bell kept costs under budget while managing nearly 20 separately bid contracts.

In a letter nominating Bell, city engineer Richard Hartman said:

``The management of the (I.C. Norcom High School project) by Mr. Bell as in-house staff alone is saving the city of Portsmouth hundreds of thousands of dollars due to his efforts in addition to the incredible experience he brings to the project.''

Bell joined the engineering department as a civil engineer in 1985 and was promoted to his current position in 1994.
