Tawney J. Moeller, a second-grade teacher at Kilby Shores Elementary School and the city's division-wide Teacher of the Year, has had to clear more space on her trophy shelf.
Moeller recently was named Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year, with the Wal-Mart Foundation awarding a $500 grant to her school. Sam Wiggs, manager of the Suffolk Wal-Mart department store, thanked Moeller: ``You do more than teach. You make learning fun and exciting. You expect the best from your students, and you give them your best.''
The department store chain honored 1,500 teachers nationwide.
Moeller also not long ago was honored by Regent University's School of Education as its Alumnus of the Year.
Sue Draper, a biology teacher at Nansemond River High School, has been asked to help write activity guides for a series of Public Broadcasting Service videos to be aired nationally in 1999. Draper was the only teacher in the country to be invited to serve on the National Association of Biology Teachers Steering Committee, which will write the guides in cooperation with the National Science Foundation.
