LINWOOD KIRKLAND

James Linwood Kirkland, 73, of the 27396 Dogwood Bend Road, a devoted husband and father, died Oct. 2, 1997, at his home.

Mr. Kirkland was a lifelong resident of Southampton County and was the son of the late James Henry and Lillie Chitty Kirkland. He had retired after 41 years of service as a machine operator at Union Camp Corp. and was a member of UPIU Local No. 1488 and Sycamore Baptist Church. He was a Navy veteran of World War II.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Doris Daughtrey Kirkland; his daughter and son-in-law, Nancy K. and Robert E. Lee; his son, James Cary Kirkland; three sisters, Lizzie K. Terry, Blanche Rose Kirkland of Norfolk, Gladys K. Starke of Ashburn, Va.; a brother, Paul H. Kirkland of Capron. He was predeceased by a sister, Mabel K. Drake, and a brother, Ruben W. Kirkland.

The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Monday in Wright Funeral Home by the Rev. Darden B. Battle, the Rev. Dr. Reginald Warren and the Rev. Edward Johnson. Burial will be in Poplar Spring Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home and suggests that memorial donations may be made to the Bon Secours, St. Mary's Health Care Foundation, 5008 Monument Ave., Richmond, Va. 23230 or the American Cancer Society, c/o Mrs. Ruth Petty, 116 Southampton Road, Franklin, Va. 23851.
