Capt. Earl Frederick Resch, U.S. Navy, retired, 73, passed away Oct. 3, 1997.
Capt. Resch was born April 27, 1924 in Chicago and was the son of the late John F. and Martha Resch. He was Catholic and attended the Little Creek Amphibious Base Chapel. He retired in 1974 after 33 years of service to his country. Following three years of enlisted service, commencing in 1941, he received an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy. After graduating in 1948, Capt. Resch served at sea on the cruiser Springfield, the minesweeper Incredible, and the submarines Crevalle, Angler, Cobbler, Sea Lion and Argonaut, in the latter two as the commanding officer.
His service awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Presidential Unit Citations (two), and various campaign medals for Asiatic-Pacific (five stars), China Service and Korea Service. He was a member of the Retired Officers Association and the U.S.N.A. Alumni Association.
He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Jean Larkins Resch. He is also survived by five daughters, Barbara Schick of Virginia Beach, Susan Taylor of Virginia Beach, Nancy Carroll of Plano, Texas, Carol Resch Gemmell of McLean, Va. and Janet Broderick of Southern Pines, N.C.; and 11 grandchildren.
A Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 9 in the Little Creek Amphibious Base Chapel by Father Joseph A. Ceriello. Interment will be at 3 p.m. Friday in Arlington National Cemetery with military honors. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
