JOHN F. BOWERS

John Fowle Bowers, 85, of 1618 Forrest Drive, died Monday, Oct. 6, 1997, at his residence. He was a native of Washington, N.C., the son of the late A.L. ``Gus'' and Sallie Bette Tayloe Bowers and the widower of Ida Brock Bowers.

Mr. Bowers was a district manager, having worked for Jefferson-Standard Life Insurance Co. for 40 years. He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, the Elizabeth City Rotary Club for 52 years, a charter member of Pine Lakes Golf Club, and Mother's Brothers Golfing Group.

Survivors include two daughters, Sallie Bette Sawyer of Camden, N.C., and Mary Alethea Mitchell of Goldsboro, N.C.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Grist Bowers, and two brothers, A.L. ``Gus'' Bowers Jr. and Joseph Tayloe Bowers.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Old Hollywood Cemetery by the Rev. Josh MacKenzie. The family requests that memorial donations be made to the Christ Episcopal Church or the Albemarle Hospice. Twiford's Memorial Chapel, E. Church St., is in charge of arrangements.
