James Lee Ralph Staton, 40, of the 5400 block of Tidewater Drive died Oct. 3, 1997, in River Pointe Rehabilitation Health Care Center.
Born in Virginia Beach, he served in the U.S. Naval Reserve and was a former substitute teacher for Norfolk Public Schools. He was a member of Mount Gilead Missionary Baptist Church where he was a member and soloist of the Number 2 Choir.
While at Kempsville High School, Class of 1975, he was a member and featured soloist of the Madrigal Singers, a select group under the direction of Mr. Lou Sawyer. Mr. Staton earned an associates degree in gerontology from Tidewater Community College, Virginia Beach campus.
Survivors include his parents, Louise Williams Staton and James L. Staton; two sisters, Mrs. Liza Richetta Sanderson and Mrs. Anita Louise White, both of Virginia Beach; a brother, William Wesley Staton of Virginia Beach; grandparent, Mrs. Malisa Staton Davis of Norfolk; three uncles, William Staton of Speed, N.C., Master Sgt. Leon C. Staton, U.S. Marine Corps, retired, of Havelock, N.C., and Joseph A. Staton Sr. of Chesapeake; six aunts, Mrs. Shirley Staton of Norfolk, Mrs. Dora Roberts and Mrs. Arlethia Staton, both of Chesapeake, Mrs. Mary Staton of Speed, N.C., Mrs. Beatrice Burrows of Stoney Creek, Va., and Mrs. Mary Lee Williams of Vancouver, Wash.; a great-aunt, Mrs. Edna Williams of Norfolk; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Delcia Staton of Virginia Beach; two brothers-in-law, Michael D. Sanderson and Eric White, both of Virginia Beach; a niece, several nephews and numerous cousins.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in Mt. Gilead Missionary Baptist Church, Norfolk, by the Rev. Michael Tolliver, pastor, First Baptist Church, South Hill, and the Rev. Byron Collins, assistant to the pastor, Mt. Gilead Missionary Baptist Church. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake. The family will receive friends at 1148 Brattleboro Arch, Bellamy Woods, Virginia Beach. E.A. Hughes Funeral Home Inc. is in charge of arrangements. KEYWORDS: DEATH OBITUARY
