Eleanore Richart Rowe died Sunday, Oct. 5, 1997, in Rappahannock Westminster-Canterbury in Irvington at the age of 93.
She was the widow of William Rowe, formerly of the Newark, New Jersey law firm of Steelman, Lafferty, Rowe, McMahon and McKeon. She was a longtime resident of Basking Ridge, N.J., and later of Chesapeake. Mrs. Rowe was born in Elizabeth, N.J., and was active in politics, church and community work in Somerset County, N.J., for many years. A life-long member of the Democratic party, she was the first female candidate for the Board of Freeholders in the state of New Jersey.
Mrs. Rowe is survived by her son, Peter W. Rowe and his wife, Ann, of Eastville, Va.; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
She was a lady of courage and distinction, and a woman ahead of her time.
Her remains will rest with those of her husband at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Basking Ridge, N.J. Donations in her memory may be made to the Virginia Coast Reserve of The Nature Conservancy, P.O. Box 158, Nassawadox, Va. 23413. KEYWORDS: DEATH OBITUARY
