Randolph Alton Stakes, 73, of the 4000 block of Bounty Road died Oct. 4, 1997, in his residence.
Born in Norfolk, he retired after 32 years with civil service. He was a engineer technician at Oceana and Fort Story until retirement in 1979 from civil service. He also worked at the Naval Supply Center from 1973 to 1979 and then worked at Norshipco as a sheet metal worker until 1988. Mr. Stakes was an honest, kind and caring man who was willing to give a hand to anyone in need. He was a master craftsman and a Jack of all trades. He was a Baptist.
Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Patricia Jeanne Spurgeon; two daughters, Julie Lynn Douglas, and husband, William D. Douglas, of Charleston, S.C., and Rebecca Knight, and husband, John ``Mickey'' Knight of Petersburg, Alaska; a son, Mark Spurgeon Stakes of Virginia Beach; a sister, Dorothy Oppert of Norfolk; grandchildren, Ryan Knight, Casey Knight and Kyle Knight of Petersburg, Alaska, Blaine Douglas, Kevin Douglas and Eric Douglas of Charleston, S.C.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Norfolk, by the Rev. Charles L. Wood. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today in Smith and Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel.
