Mary Waters Hodges, 104, a former resident of the 400 block of Terrapin Road, died Monday evening, Oct. 6, 1997, in Sentara Leigh Hospital, Norfolk.
Mrs. Hodges was born in Beaufort County on Nov. 3, 1892. She was the daughter of the late Thomas I. Waters and the late Alvaney Brown Waters. Mrs. Hodges married James Henry Hodges on Feb. 28, 1915. He preceded her in death April 22, 1959. Mrs. Hodges was a homemaker and a mother. She was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church. Mrs. Hodges, for the past 11 years, had resided in Virginia Beach with her daughter, Mrs. Iris L. Blankenship.
In addition to her daughter, survivors include James Henry (Marjorie) Hodges Jr. of Washington and Jesse T. (Nora) Hodges of Winterville; nine grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
Mrs. Hodges was preceded in death by a daughter, Allie Gray Alligood, Nov. 13, 1990; three grandsons, Steve Hodges, December 1968, Greg Hodges, April 1972, and William Alligood, Aug. 16, 1994; two sons-in-law, Bobby Blankenship, May 24, 1995, and Ralph Alligood, November 1995.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at the chapel of Paul Funeral Home by the Rev. Claire Clyburn. Burial will be in Oakdale Cemetery.
Mrs. Hodges' grandchildren will serve as pallbearers: John Alligood, Randy Hodges, Ronald Hodges, Stewart Hodges, Michael Hodges, Larry Hodges, Keith Hodges, Barbara Black and Lou Tyer.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today in the funeral home and at other times at her home, 4040 Terrapin Road, Washington.
