MONTH AHEAD OFFERS A FULL SLATE OF FUN, FUND-RAISERS

Like tricks and treats, fun and fund-raisers go together here this month. Here is a preview of some community events scheduled in October.

Oct. 9: Steak 'n' Burger Dinner, sponsored by Albemarle Hospital and Golden Corral to benefit the Boys and Girls Club of Elizabeth City. North Carolina Sports Hall of Famer Bobby Jones will speak. The dinner will start at 7 p.m. at Elizabeth City State University's K.E. White Center. For ticket information, call 335-5276.

Oct. 11: Elizabeth City State University Homecoming. A parade leaves the Boys and Girls Club at 10 a.m., travels east on Ehringhaus, turns left on Road Street, right onto Main Street, right again on Water Street and continues on Southern Avenue to campus. The pre-game show begins at 1:30 p.m. at Roebuck Stadium. Kickoff between the ECSU Vikings and Bowie State (Maryland) Tigers is at 2 p.m. For information on other Homecoming activities, call 335-3686 or 335-3226.

Fred Fearing Day Reception. Rose Buddy Fearing will be honored for his many years of promoting Elizabeth City, especially to boaters who stop on their travels on the Intracoastal Waterway. Sponsored by Elizabeth City Downtown, Inc. and the Elizabeth City Area Chamber of Commerce, the free event will take place from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on the Waterworks Deck. Light refreshments will be served. For more information, call 338-4104. Oct. 18: Fall Fashion Show and Clothing Sale to benefit Albemarle School. A traveling apparel shop will sell designer dresses, sportswear and accessories at discount prices from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. at Pine Lakes Country Club. The shopping is free and open to the public. Some tickets to an 11 a.m. brunch, featuring models from the school, are still available at $12. For more information, call 330-2180, 333-2224 or 331-2772.

Oct. 24-25: Historic Ghost Walk. A candlelit stroll through mysterious old homes, churches and the Episcopal Cemetery, the oldest active burial ground in the city. Sponsored by the Elizabeth City Historic Neighborhood Association, the tour also will feature gospel music, trolley rides, refreshments and souvenirs. Hours are 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.; tickets are $8 in advance and $10 on tour nights at the Hugh Cale Community Association, 518 Shepard Street. For an additional charge, First Baptist Church, 300 W. Main St., will serve a dinner of traditional Southern fare from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on tour nights. For more information, call 338-3733 or 1-800-678-1669.

Oct. 24-26: 39th Albemarle Craftsman's Fair, sponsored by the Albemarle Craftsman's Guild with the Albemarle Area Extension Homemaker Clubs and the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service. Crafters will show and sell their work Oct. 24 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Oct. 25 and 26 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., at Knobbs Creek Recreation Center, 200 E. Ward St. Among the skills to be showcased are weaving, woodcarving, quilting, basketmaking, knitting, caning, lacemaking, leatherworking, rug hooking and dollmaking. Exhibitors also will sell jewelry, stained glass, pottery, tinware, musical instruments and more. General admission is $3. For more information, call 338-3954.

Oct. 25: SPCA Dog Show at Southgate Mall. Dogs will be entered in whimsical categories, such as biggest paws and pointiest nose. Registration is 12 p.m. to 1 p.m., the contests from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

A $1 donation per entry is requested. The SPCA also will offer pets for adoption during the show, which is sponsored by the mall and Friskies Pet Care Products.

Oct. 26: Walk for Hunger, Albemarle Manna's biggest fund-raiser of the year. Participants are invited to walk, run, skate, skateboard or bicycle a 10K route beginning at Hobbs Park at 2 p.m. and ending at Charles Creek Park. Recruiter packets and walk pledge sheets are available at the Albemarle Manna office, 313 S. Road St.
