WEEKLY BRIEFING

IN GENERAL

SHIP VISITS: Three Navy ships will be open to the public Saturday and Sunday. The destroyer Thorn will be at Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth. Visitors should enter through Gate 3. The tank landing ship Lamoure County will be at Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base. Visitors should enter through Gate 1. Both ships will be open from 1 to 4:30 p.m. The guided missile destroyer Stout will be at Nauticus on Waterside Drive, Norfolk. Call the Tour and Information Center at 444-7637 for the hours.

DUATHLON COMPETITOR: Lt. j.g. George Ganoung of the Coast Guard's National Strike Force, stationed in Elizabeth City, N.C., finished as the second American at the World Duathlon Championships in Spain last month. He also placed fifth in his age group. Participating as a member of the U.S. National Duathlon Team, Ganoung completed a 6.2-mile run, a 25-mile bike ride and a 3.1-mile run in just under two hours. His wife, Jennifer, placed 11th in her age group as a member of the women's team. More than 1,200 athletes from 35 countries competed.

LITTLE CREEK CHAPEL: The 25th anniversary of the chapel at Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Saturday. The speaker will be Rear Adm. (select) Barry Black. The service is open to the public. The chapel, which was dedicated on Oct. 11, 1972, hosts more than 2,600 people at five weekly services. The chapel is located inside Gate 5, at the intersection of Shore Drive and Independence Boulevard.

JOB FAIR: The Military Affairs Council of the Virginia Peninsula Chamber of Commerce will present its semiannual Armed Forces Job Fair from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24, at the Hampton Holiday Inn.

BONE MARROW DRIVE: Bone marrow donor drives will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 14, at the Oceana Navy Exchange lobby; from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15, at the Norfolk Navy Exchange conference room; and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, at the Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base Navy Exchange lobby. BRIGADE COMMANDER: Fourth-year midshipman Eric Grant of Virginia Beach has been named Brigade Commander at the U.S. Naval Academy. He now holds the top leadership position and assumes responsibility for the daily military activities and performance of the brigade. Grant attended Norfolk Academy.

GUEST SPEAKER: Richard DiPeppe, director of community services for the Endependence Center Inc. in Norfolk, will be guest speaker at a luncheon for Disability Awareness Month. The event begins at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 17, at the Fort Monroe Club. Tickets are $6. For tickets or information, call 727-3500.

HALLOWEEN EVENTS: A 5K run will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15, at the M-area golf course and track at Norfolk Naval Station. Pre-register at Building C-9 (DeVary Hall) or before 11 a.m. on race day. A pre-race meeting will be held at 11:15. COMINGS AND GOINGS

Cmdr. Todd R. Miller has relieved Cmdr. Mark N. Clemente as commanding officer of Fighter Squadron 213. Clemente's next assignment is with the U.S. Naval Academy's leadership, ethics and law department. The squadron's new executive officer is Cmdr. Mark Adamshick, who comes from the Navy staff in Washington, D.C.
