John Edward Yvars Sr., 67, died Wednesday Oct. 9, 1997, in a Chesapeake hospital.
Mr. Yvars, born in Canton, Ohio, lived in Valhalla, N.Y., for 60 years and was a recreation specialist for the Veterans Administration Hospital in Montrose, N.Y. He was a two-time All-American baseball player for N.C. State and in 1954 was First Team All-American. Mrs. Yvars was a veteran having served in the U.S. Army. He was the son of the late Jack and Lena Fusaro Yvars and preceded in death by a sister, Theresa Filiciotto.
Mr. Yvars is survived by his wife, Joan Daniell Yvars of the home; two daughters, Janet and Jamie Yvars, both of Albuquerque, N.M.; a son, John Yvars Jr. of Courtlandt Manor, N.Y.; two grandchildren, Rhiannon and Kelsey, both of Courtlandt Manor; two brothers, Sal Yvars and Jack Yvars, both of Valhalla. Jack Yvars was a former N.C. State baseball player on the same team as his brother, John. Sal Yvars played with the St. Louis Cardinals and also with the N.Y. Giants in the 1951 World Series.
A memorial service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday in Duck United Methodist Church by the Rev. David Clift. A memorial service will also be held at a later date in Valhalla. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Duck United Methodist Church, Duck, N.C. 27949. Twiford Colony Chapel, Manteo, is handling arrangements. KEYWORDS: DEATH OBITUARY
