Harbert Earl Gibson Jr., 78, died Thursday Oct. 9, 1997, in his residence.
He was born in Uniontown, Ky. and was the widower of Cecil ``Bobbie'' Irene Gibson. Mr. Gibson was a retired U.S. Navy veteran of 20 years having served in World War II and a Pearl Harbor survivor. He retired from the Norfolk City Public Schools after 14 years.
He was a member of the Fleet Reserve Branch No. 60, American Legion Post No. 327 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 3160.
Survivors include five daughters, Gwendolyn Cornwell and her husband, Butch, Glenda Pyles and her husband, Eddie, all of Norfolk, Kathleen Harrison and her husband, Samuel, Patricia Sykes and her husband, Rick, Jeraleen ``Susie'' Ziegler and her husband, David, all of Virginia Beach; two sons, Bert E. Gibson of Norfolk, Kevin Gibson of Long Island, N.Y.; 16 grandchildren; two great-grandsons; and good friend and caretaker, Beverly Huffman.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 13, in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Dayton Birt and the Rev. Hennie Becker. Family and friends will gather at the funeral home at 7 p.m. Saturday for a service of military honors. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
