HOUSE FIRE LEAVES 7 MENTALLY HANDICAPPED PEOPLE HOMELESS

Seven people, all mentally handicapped, were left homeless Thursday when flames damaged a house in the 1100 block of Wall St.

The blaze, reported about 3:30 p.m., was quickly brought under control. No one was hurt.

But the fire caused enough damage to make it impossible for anyone to remain at the residence. Compounding the problems, the homeowner's ``insurance has expired,'' said Jack Goldhorn, a fire department spokesman. ``The woman will be unable to make repairs at this time.''

The residents lost all they own, Goldhorn said. Norfolk Social Services, Community Mental Health and the American Red Cross were placing the residents in temporary homes, Goldhorn said.

The fire was caused by a corroded natural gas pipe. KEYWORDS: FIRE
