Police attempting to serve a search warrant shot and wounded a man after he confronted them with a gun Thursday night.
The man, whose identity was not immediately known, was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Police said his injuries did not appear to be life-threatening. No officers were hurt.
Police spokesman Larry Hill said officers went to the 9500 block of 25th Bay St. at 8:13 p.m. to serve a search warrant related to suspected illegal narcotics. Following established procedure, they knocked on the door and announced that they were there with the warrant.
As they went in, however, ``this guy was standing at the door with a gun pointed at the officers,'' Hill said. He didn't get any shots off, however. ``He didn't have a chance to'' before officers fired.
Charges are pending against the man, Hill said.
Homicide investigators will look into the shooting, as will the internal affairs division - both routine responses after officers are involved in a shooting, Hill said. The findings of those investigations will be forwarded to the commonwealth's attorney for review.
The officers involved will be placed on administrative duty, Hill said, pending the reviews. KEYWORDS: NORFOLK POLICE DEPARTMENT INVESTIGATION SHOOTING
