A Daily Press circulation department employee was beaten with a pipe and shot several times early Thursday morning while on shift. The victim, single-copy supervisor Lynwood Harrison, 44, of Hampton was in critical condition Thursday afternoon at Riverside Regional Medical Center.
An unknown suspect entered Harrison's office and ``began striking him about the arms and legs with a pipe,'' said Newport News Police spokesman, Officer Peter Edgette. The suspect forced Harrison into a lobby area, where he shot him ``multiple'' times.
A co-worker walked in on the scene, then went to a nearby building to call police, Edgette said. The circulation building is separate from the news and production buildings, and is fronted by a new shop, ``Signs by Daily Press.''
Police received the call around 12:45 a.m. The co-worker returned to the scene. Police arrived soon after, and Harrison was taken by ambulance to Riverside, Edgette said. The beating and shooting are being investigated, and a motive has not been determined.
Police have asked hospital personnel not to release any additional information, a hospital representative said. Police also are not providing details about the crime scene, Edgette said.
The suspect is described as a black male with a slim to muscular build, and about 6 feet 1 inch tall, Edgette said. Thursday afternoon, police investigators were searching for a gun and other evidence in the shrubs near the building. KEYWORDS: SHOOTING ASSAULT
