BEACH TEEN KILLED, SISTER INJURED IN CRASH

A Tallwood High School student was killed and her twin sister seriously injured when the car they were in collided with a truck Friday afternoon, police said.

Annie McLaughlin, 17, of the 1600 block of Grey Friars Chase died about 8:50 p.m. in the Trauma Center at Virginia Beach General Hospital. Her sister, Emily McLaughlin, also a Tallwood student, was listed in guarded condition late Friday.

The accident happened about 2:30 p.m. at the intersection of Indian River Road and Lynnhaven Parkway, police said.

The McLaughlins were in a 1986 Toyota heading north on Lynnhaven when it collided with a 1988 Chevrolet truck driven by Edward E. Cunningham, 53, of the 3100 block of Blackwood Ave. in Norfolk. The truck had been westbound on Indian River Road.

Annie McLaughlin was a passenger in the car, which was being driven by her sister. It took rescue crews using special gear about 20 minutes to free her.

Cunningham was not hurt.

The sequence of events leading to the accident remained unclear late Friday, although police said the traffic light at the intersection appeared to have been functioning properly.

Police are asking anyone who witnessed the wreck but was not interviewed by officers at the scene to contact Master Police Officer John Lourenco at 427-5616.

No charges had been filed as of Friday night. KEYWORDS: ACCIDENT TRAFFIC DEATH TEENAGER
