Two little passes made a big difference for Norcom on Friday night.
Quarterback Kevin Jones hit running back Charles Lowe with two short dumps for long touchdowns as the second-ranked Greyhounds defeated Granby 15-0 at Harbor Park.
On Norcom's third possession, it faced a third-and-18 from its own 34. Jones was chased out of the pocket and dumped a screen pass to Lowe at the line of scrimmage.
Jones followed his blocking to midfield and then broke down the middle for a 66-yard touchdown and a 7-0 lead with 7:50 left in the second quarter.
On a similar play late in the third quarter, Jones found Lowe open on the right sideline around the line of scrimmage. Lowe then cut inside and dashed into the end zone for a 45-yard score with 29 seconds left in the quarter.
The Greyhounds (5-1, 3-0 Eastern) mishandled the PAT kick attempt, but holder Azaza Hudson found Genoa Everett for the two-point conversion and a 15-0 lead.
The PAT conversion, though, would not be the only big play Everett was involved in for Norcom.
All night long, the All-Tidewater defensive end and his teammates had Granby quarterback Dexter Reid on the run. And half the time, they tracked him down.
Everett recorded two of the five sacks against Reid, who was also stopped two other times for negative yardage.
``That was the plan,'' Everett said. ``Put a pass-rush on the quarterback.''
Reid completed just 4 of 17 passes for 31 yards. And the ground game didn't do much better.
The Comets (2-4, 0-3) were held to 41 yards on 28 carries.
Norcom's TaRon Anderson, who suffered a neck injury last week against Wilson, punted all night but had just three carries for 7 yards. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
