Janie Cunningham Crutchfield, 91, of 202 S. Hughes St. died Thursday, Oct. 9, 1997, in Western Wake Medical Center, Cary.
Janie was born in Apex, the daughter of the late James Reeves and Elizabeth Cunningham. She lived in North Carolina her entire life, the last 23 years in Apex at the Cunningham home place. She was a graduate of Greensboro College with a degree in spoken English and dramatic arts. Janie was an educator, having taught school in the state of North Carolina for 39 years in 10 different schools across the state. While teaching, she also coached drama and women's basketball. She was the wife of the late Clarence J. (Tobe) Crutchfield of Moncure.
She is survived by two sons, Clarence J. (Jack) Crutchfield Jr. of Bermuda Run, N.C., and James C. Crutchfield of Virginia Beach; a sister, Jessie Ruth Cunningham of Apex; four grandchildren, Rene C. Singletary and Trace Crutchfield, both of Winston-Salem, Karen Crutchfield of Virginia Beach, and Lisa Crutchfield of Williamsburg; and three great-grandchildren.
Janie's life was a celebration to all who knew her. She will be sadly missed by her family.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in Apex United Methodist Church by the Rev. Henry N. Lovelace. Burial will be at 4 p.m. in the Oakwood Cemetery, Siler City. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today in the Apex Funeral Home, Williams St., and at other times at the home. Memorials may be made to The Alzheimer's Association, Eastern N.C.
