JOSEPH L. WOMACK JR.

Joseph Leeder Womack Jr., 73, died Sunday, Oct. 12, 1997, in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

Born in Reidsville, N.C., he had lived on the Peninsula since 1957 where he retired in 1987 after 16 years as Hampton city engineer. After serving in the Army during World War II, Mr. Womack earned a degree in engineering from N.C. State in 1950. His engineering career then started with Piatt and Davis Consulting Engineering Firm, Durham, N.C., where he worked until receiving his professional engineer's license in North Carolina in 1957. Later, he transferred his P.E. license to Virginia. He was public works director for Newport News for 12 years before moving to Hampton.

Joe was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Hampton, where he was a former chairman of the board of deacons. He was serving on the board of the Hampton YMCA and was a member of the American Public Works Association. His former activities include membership in the Hampton Rotary Club, member of the Hampton Coliseum Advisory Board and commissioner on the Peninsula Regional Redevelopment and Housing Authority.

Survivors include his wife, Ellen P. Womack; two daughters and their husbands, Catherine W. and Mark H. Turner of York County and Lee W. and Gary S. Francella of Virginia Beach; a son and his wife, Charles P. and Katharine A. Womack of Virginia Beach; five grandchildren, Eric Turner, Lindsay Turner, Ryan Turner, Layne Francella and Caitlin Womack.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in First Presbyterian Church, Hampton, by the Rev. George L. Oehler. Entombment will follow in Parklawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today in R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church Building Fund, 514 S.
