JERRY A. WINDLEY

Jerry A. ``Choo Choo'' Windley, 65, of the 4500 block of Westborough Drive, died Oct. 10, 1997, in Maryview Medical Center, Portsmouth.

He was born in Norfolk County, Va., and was a graduate of Norfolk County High School and St. Paul College, Lawrenceville, Va., where he received all C.I.A.A. honors as a running back. Mr. Windley retired as a physical education teacher, coach and pupil service specialist for the Chesapeake City Public School System after 36 years. He was a football, basketball, track and baseball coach at the former Carver High School, South Norfolk and the former Crestwood Junior High School. He was named basketball coach of the year for E.I.A.C. Conference while at Kittrell Junior College, Henderson, N.C. In 1980 at Crestwood Junior High, he was named coach of the year in football and track and his teams won the city titles. There, he also voted teacher of the year in 1983. Several years later, he was inducted into the Chesapeake Sports Hall of Fame for his distinguished coaching career in Chesapeake Public Schools.

He was a lifelong member of Divine Baptist Church, Chesapeake, and formerly chairperson of the church council committee, member of the church Constitution and By-Laws Committee; and founder of the church Endowment Fund. He was also former president of Colonial Point Civic League and a U.S. Army veteran

Survivors include his wife, Alma P. Windley; two daughters, Anita C. (Vincent) Brunson of Chesapeake, Cheryl T. (Mark) Duffy of Chesapeake; three brothers, Redell (Irma) Windley of Many, La., Hiawatha (Lucia) Windley of Portsmouth, Horace (Iner) Windley of Philadelphia; a grandchild, Vincent A. Brunson Jr. of Chesapeake; mother-in-law, Mabel Patrick of Chesapeake; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Zilphia M. and Redell Windley and a sister, Mildred W. Winston.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday in Divine Baptist Church, Chesapeake, by the Rev. John C. Smith. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Chesapeake, with military honors. Viewing at Corprew Funeral Home will begin at noon Wednesday. The body will be taken to the church at 11 a.m. Thursday. ILLUSTRATION: Photo KEYWORDS: DEATH OBITUARY
