Leroy Onley, 87, of the 700 block of Body Road died Monday morning, Oct. 13, 1997, at his residence.
He was a native of Perquimans County and a retired boat builder with the Norfolk Naval Shipyard. He was a former member of Halls Creek United Methodist Church, son of the late William and Mrs. Ella Russell Onley and the widower of Jessie Ray Smithson Onley.
He is survived by a son, Roy M. Onley, and daughter-in-law, Ronnie Jean Onley, of Elizabeth City, N.C.; a half-sister, Mattie Cooper Midgett of Newport, N.C.; three grandchildren, Steve Onley of Elizabeth City, Stan Onley of Atwater, Calif., Sheri Harris of Elizabeth City; and five great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Westlawn Cemetery by the Rev. Leon Overman and the Rev. Tom Burkett. The family will be at the residence of his son and daughter-in-law, Roy M. and Ronnie Jean Onley, 750 Body Road, Elizabeth City. Twiford's Northside Chapel, Elizabeth City, is in charge.
