PORTSMOUTH
Physician mentoring moves
into 2nd year of program
Portsmouth Family Medicine soon will kick off the second year of a mentoring program that gives medical residents a better understanding of adolescent health issues.
Called AIM, short for Adolescents in Medicine, the program began last year by pairing six second-year residents with six seventh-graders from Cradock Middle School.
An open house to introduce the new seventh-graders to their mentors and to re-acquaint the returning students with their physician mentors will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Portsmouth Family Medicine, 2700 London Blvd.
First-year students learn the significance of blood pressure and the role it plays in cardiovascular health; the effects of obesity on the heart; the role cholesterol, diet and family history play in heart disease; and how substance abuse affects one's health.
Second-year students continue their coat-tailing experience, with emphasis on developing skills to become effective peer counselors. Students learn about risk-taking behaviors, substance abuse, school problems, depression, suicide, eating disorders and conflict resolution.
The program is being administered as part of a federal grant. Resident mentors not only provide opportunities for adolescents to develop and nurture an interest in medicine but also serve as positive role models, said Viki Lorraine, an assistant professor at Eastern Virginia Medical School.
For more information about AIM, call Lorraine at 446-7400.
