A Newport News man was arrested Monday night in Thursday's beating and shooting of a Daily Press circulation department employee.
Nathaniel Dennis, 43, of the 400 block of Turlington Road, was charged with attempted murder, maiming and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, said Newport News police spokesman Peter Edgette.
According to victim and witness accounts, Dennis entered the Daily Press office of Lynwood Harrison, 44, of Hampton early Thursday morning and beat him about the arms and legs with a pipe, Edgette said. Dennis then forced Harrison into a lobby area, where he shot him several times, he said.
Harrison, who was in critical condition Thursday afternoon at Riverside Regional Medical Center, is now stable, Edgette said. He is a single-copy supervisor for the Daily Press.
The suspect, Dennis, was employed as a night maintenance worker at the newspaper by a subcontracting company, Edgette said.
The motive for the beating and shooting was still under investigation Monday night. KEYWORDS: ASSAULT SHOOTING ARREST
