RODNEY E. SHIFLETT

Rodney Engleman Shiflett, 87, of the 1800 block of S. Woodhouse Road, formerly of Staunton, died at his residence Monday morning, Oct. 13, 1997.

Mr. Shiflett was born July 25, 1910, in Churchville, a son of the late William E. and Lillian Engleman Shiflett. A graduate of Dunsmore Business College, he worked at Blue Ridge Cold Storage for 21 years and retired from Ingleside Hotel as controller with 21 years service. Mr. Shiflett was a member of Second Presbyterian Church, where he served as a deacon and treasurer of the Sunday School. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Elliot's Knob Aerie No. 680, Elks Lodge No. 450 of Harrisonburg, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Staunton Moose Lodge No. 1635, Valley Lodge No. 5, Knights of Pythias and the A.A.R.P.

Survivors include a daughter, Dorothy Lee Shiflett Williams of Virginia Beach, with whom he made his home; a daughter-in-law, Patricia E. Shiflett of Staunton; seven grandchildren, Sherrill L. Williams, Stephen L. Williams, William E. Shiflett, Robert A. Shiflett, James P. Shiflett, Terry D. Shiflett and Tracy D. Shiflett; and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Fairye Wilson Calhoun Shiflett, on Sept. 7, 1983, and a son, Rodney Engleman Shiflett Jr., on May 3, 1989.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in Second Presbyterian Church by Dr. Daniel S. Williams. Burial will be in Thornrose Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be members of the Staunton Volunteer Fire Department: Edward Carter, W.A. Shaver, Richard Baker, Russell L. Flint Jr., James H. Mullenax, Robert W. Rohr, Jack Dull and John Mader.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Fraternal Order of Eagles and Elks Lodge No. 450 of Harrisonburg.

Friends will be received at Hamrick Funeral Home from 7 to 8 p.m. today.
