DIV I-AA REPORT

Tribe's TD maker

William Brown can't keep this up forever.

Sooner or later, the Southampton High graduate is going to catch a pass that doesn't result in six points for William and Mary.

But right now, he's batting a thousand. Brown, a reserve fullback, has caught three career passes - all for touchdowns.

``It's something they put in for me,'' Brown said. ``It's actually two different plays, and it's worked three times.''

The Tribe has had fullbacks who were goal-line specialists before, but Brown is a different sort. At 240 pounds, he has good speed and excellent hands. He hasn't been touched on any of his scoring plays, which have gone for 2, 5 and 9 yards.

Brown has yet to score on the ground. But he expects the next time he enters a game, he'll draw more attention.

``After three times, I'm sure they'll be looking for it a little bit more,'' he said.

William and Mary on TV

William and Mary will be making a rare appearance on television Saturday night, when its game at Connecticut will be carried live on Home Team Sports (7 p.m.).

``It's nice to have the exposure,'' coach Jimmye Laycock said. ``You just hope it's good exposure, and you play well.''

The Tribe has not had a game televised since last year's season opener at Central Florida.

Revolving QBs at Richmond

Tailbacks rotate. So do fullbacks, guards and wide receivers.

Richmond coach Jim Reid sees no reason he can't rotate his quarterbacks, too. He did it last week, when Mat Shannon and Jimmy Miles played against Delaware. He'll do it again Saturday against No. 3 Villanova.

``I don't think, unless there's a dramatic difference, you shouldn't be able to throw in two quarterbacks and let them play,'' Reid said.

Richmond, though, has been carried by its defense, which ranks fourth in I-AA. The Spiders will be tested by the Wildcats, who lead I-AA in scoring.

Defensive backs wanted

James Madison was burned for 300 yards passing and for touchdowns against William and Mary last week, after being beaten for 257 yards and five touchdowns by Villanova the week before.

Asked if he would make any changes in the secondary for Saturday's game against Delaware, coach Alex Wood said he'd like to, but can't.

``Those are the only guys we have,'' he said.
