The Federal Maritime Commission postponed a vote Monday on dropping its threat to ban three Japanese ship lines from U.S. ports, saying it needs more information on Japanese promises to open their ports to U.S. ship lines. The commission is waiting on additional information on an agreement reached Friday between U.S. and Japanese negotiators. The ban was to have taken effect last Friday, but the last-minute agreement prompted the commission to postpone the action. U.S. shipping lines say restrictive port practices in Japan limit their ability to compete. All three Japanese ship lines call in the port of Hampton Roads.
