LETTERS TO THE EDITOR - THE VIRGINIAN-PILOT

ATTORNEY GENERAL

Earley will preserve

parole, welfare gains

These past four years have been historic ones for Virginia. We have abolished parole, reformed the welfare system and passed parental notification. Yet there are those who are attempting to roll back these gains in court.

We need an attorney general who will fight to preserve these gains - Mark Earley. He stood with Governor Allen to pass parole abolition and sponsored both welfare reform and parental notification. Who better to preserve the progress of the past four years?

Earley is neither

on the left nor right

During the Republican primary, Mark Earley was criticized by the other candidates as being too friendly to unions, too friendly to teachers, too friendly to minority groups and too supportive of environmental protection. In a word, they argued he was too liberal to be attorney general.

Now that Earley has won the GOP nomination, liberal Democrats want you to believe he is a right-wing extremist.

The truth is that Mark Earley has worked comfortably with Virginians of all political philosophies. There is no contradiction in being tough on crime, opposed to high taxes, supportive of public education, concerned about blue-collar workers and protective of the environment.

Earley has rejected extremism both right and left. He has the principles, character and experience to be a great attorney general.
