Carl Spurgeon Richards Jr., 66, of the 400 block of Brewers Creek Lane, died Monday Oct. 20, 1997, in his residence.
A native of Boston, Mass., he was the son of the late Carl S. Richards Sr. and Mary Selanus Richards. He retired from IBM after 35 years. Mr. Richards was a member of Benns United Methodist Church and a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. He was previously married to the late Claudia Richards, mother of his two surviving sons.
Survivors include his wife, Lorene I. Richards; two sons, Scott Richards of Washington, D.C., and Chris Richards of Chesapeake; four stepchildren, Debrah Mach of Eagan, Minn., Brenda Wagner of St. Paul, Minn., Heather Butler of Kenmore, N.Y., and Mark Griffin of Minneapolis; a brother, Phillip Richards of Portsmouth; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday in Benns United Methodist Church by Pastor Fred L. Breeden. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at Sturtevant Funeral Home, Bennetts Creek Chapel, from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday. The family suggests memorial donations be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
