A developer withdrew its controversial DeLaura property plans Tuesday, two months after the City Council asked for architectural promises as well as a slow-build to lessen the fiscal impact on the city.
The controversy focused on whether the city could afford DeLaura, a proposed 320-home development on Clearfield Avenue.
With the city facing more than $100 million in unfunded school construction, it was debated whether the developer's offer of land for a new school would be a blessing or a burden.
The Planning Commission had recommended the property be denied its rezoning request in July.
The proposal can come back to the City Council and Planning Commission at any time. KEYWORDS: CHESAPEAKE CITY COUNCIL
