A man who allegedly led police on a car chase Tuesday night was shot by an officer after he tried to run away.
The condition of the suspect, whose name was not immediately released, was not available. He was shot once, then taken to Riverside Regional Medical Center.
Details of the incident were sketchy, but police spokesman Jeff Walden said it started about 6 p.m., when an officer saw a vehicle believed to be occupied by a suspect wanted for carjacking charges.
Police attempted to stop the vehicle on Big Bethel Road near Hampton Roads Center Parkway, but the driver refused to stop and fled. The pursuit went onto Semple Farm Road and then to Magruder Boulevard before the driver looped back to Big Bethel.
Police did not say how fast they were traveling.
Finally, the vehicle stopped on Wellington Drive, where the driver pulled into a yard. There were two suspects in the car. Police apprehended one man inside the vehicle, but the other ran into a back yard on Barrington Place.
``The officer that was chasing the suspect engaged the suspect and fired his weapon,'' Walden said.
Paramedics then took him to Riverside, Walden said. The shooting is under investigation, he said. KEYWORDS: CARJACKING CAR CHASE SHOOTING
