ARTIST TO TEACH SOAPSTONE CARVING WORKSHOP IN IOW

Artist Ben Sherman will present a Virginia Museum of Fine Arts workshop, ``Carved In Stone,'' at Smithfield High School at 8:30 a.m., Friday.

Sponsored by the Suffolk Art League, the presentation is for selected students from Smithfield High, Windsor High School, and Isle of Wight Academy.

Sherman will lead participants in the design and execution of a small soap-stone sculpture. Students will be given stones which they can examine, searching for clues and suggestions as to whether to carve an animal, human or abstract form.

Working from drawings, the students will visualize the process through which surface, volume and movement are explored. They will have the opportunity to carve, finish, and polish a small sculpture.

Sherman's work has been displayed at the Riverside Museum in New York City, and the State of the Art Gallery in Ithaca, N.Y. He has been a visiting artist with the New York public schools for 10 years.
