FIRE DAMAGES DORM ROOM AT NORFOLK STATE

A one-room fire at Smith Hall, a dormitory on the campus of Norfolk State University, was extinguished without further incident or injury Wednesday night.

The cause of the fire, on the dorm's first floor, is under investigation.

The fire was reported at 8:10 p.m. at the dormitory, in the 2400 block of Corprew Ave., said fire department spokesman Jack Goldhorn. The building was safely evacuated.

Fire damage was limited to one room, although there was minor smoke damage on the rest of the first floor.

Goldhorn credited the all-concrete construction of the dormitory with helping to prevent a spread of the blaze, which was doused within 10 minutes.

There was no immediate estimate on the cost of the damage. KEYWORDS: FIRE NSU
