SHIPYARD TO PAY FINE

Newport News Shipbuilding has decided to pay the $6,300 fine levied against it for a sewage leak that killed three workers aboard the aircraft carrier Harry S Truman. The shipyard said it had planned to contest the Occupational Safety and Health Administration fine. The citation issued Oct. 8 by OSHA found that the shipyard did not adequately train employees who work in enclosed spaces about the potential hazards of gases from sewage. OSHA also required the shipyard to provide additional safety training. Shipyard spokeswoman Jerri Fuller Dickseski said such training has been under way since the deaths.
