The Elizabeth River Project and volunteer Josh Priest have received an international award for their work in restoring a section of natural wetlands behind the Larchmont Library on the Lafayette River in Norfolk.
Priest, a Navy engineer, and ERP, a grass-roots environmental group, won the 1997 Clearwater Award at a ceremony last week in Baltimore. The award, recognizing citizen efforts and innovative environmental solutions, is made each year by the Waterfront Center.
Priest and his two brothers spearheaded construction of the Birdsong Wetlands, a 1-acre experiment in which an aging bulkhead was replaced by some 4,000 marsh grasses. It encourages the return of waterfowl and marine life to a small, degraded cove on the Lafayette.
