WHERE TO WINDSURF
SOUNDSIDE
Windmill Point - Popular with flat water sailors. The site has
parking and a launch area. Egoists love it because they can show off
for the people dining in the nearby restaurant.
Rodanthe - Most of the windsurfing happens behind the old Emily's
Restaurant.
Salvo Campground - A good place to sail the sound, and the
National Park Service has improved access.
Canadian Hole - This spot is favored, especially when the winds
are out of the southwest. Plenty of parking, a good stretch of beach
for landing, launching and viewing.
Frisco Woods - You pay for access, but there is a campground and
there is access up to the water's edge.
OCEAN SIDE
Oregon Inlet - In downhill skiing, the black diamond is used to
mark the most treacherous slopes. This spots rates two diamonds.
Strong currents make it a place best left to experts.
Ramp 23 - South of Salvo. Access is pretty much limited to
off-road vehicles.
Ramp 34 - Located in Avon, this spot is popular especially during
and after strong northeasters. Access is pretty much limited to
off-road vehicles.
Canadian Hole - The spot is popular with surf riders as well as
flat-water windsurfers, given its parking is a short walk across the
highway.
Hatteras Inlet - Like Oregon Inlet, this is an experts-only site
with strong tidal current. Access is pretty much limited to off-road
vehicles.
