CLIFFORD P. BURTON

Colonel Clifford Powell ``Cliff'' Burton, U.S. Army Air Force, retired, 92, of 540 Fishermans Bend passed away Sunday, Oct. 26, 1997, in a Chesapeake assisted living center.

He was a native of Minneapolis, Minn., and the loving husband of the late Frances Coyner Burton.

Cliff was the Air Traffic Control Association Executive Director in Washington, D.C. At the time Clifford P. Burton was the most eminently qualified man ever to hold the position. Cliff retired from the FAA in December 1965 after completing 33 years of government service.

From 1963 to 1965, Cliff served for several months as Acting Director of FAA's Air Traffic Service. From 1959 to 1963, he served progressively as Chief of the Analysis, Airspace Utilization and Special Projects Divisions in the Agency's Air Traffic Service and Office of Plans. From April 1956 to September 1958, Burton served as Air Traffic Control Associations first Executive Director. He was a veteran of World War II.

Cliff is survived by one brother, Albert G. Burton of Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada; two nieces, Mrs. Elizabeth Holtzclaw of Arlington, Va., and Mrs. Elaine Miller of Hickory, N.C.; and one nephew, Edwin A. Coyner Jr. of Virginia Beach.

The family will greet friends in the Maestas Funeral Home, Baltic Ave. Chapel, today from 7 to 8 p.m. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Bethany Trinity Lutheran Church Cemetery, Waynesboro, Va., by the Rev. Dr. Jon Drefentholer. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Virginia Beach Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 945, Virginia Beach, Va. 23451. KEYWORDS: DEATH OBITUARY
