NORFOLK
A program to increase the number of high-achieving math and science students preparing for teaching careers has awarded $2,000 scholarships to 11 Norfolk State University education majors.
Chosen as National Science Foundation Teaching Scholars for the 1997-98 academic year were: Amberleigh B. Chittum, Temesha D. Daughtry, Terrie Graham, Christine Hirschman, Corey F. Jones, Liana K. Nestor, Kimberly R. Person, Tessa C. Reaves, Christina Y. Webb, Wanda M. Whitfield and Janice R. Woods.
The chosen students will serve as apprentice teachers, tutor young children, help teach college math and science courses and work on projects to improve teaching.
Linda Mayfield, Norview High School English teacher, has been selected as a regional judge for the 1997 National Council of Teachers of English Achievement Awards in Writing.
The national contest cites approximately 800 high school seniors for excellence in writing.
VIRGINIA BEACH
The American Red Cross gave Rene Perez-Lopez, vice president for information systems and director of the library at Virginia Wesleyan College, its Volunteer Recognition Award for chairing the Tidewater chapter of the American Red Cross Language Bank for 20 years.
Perez-Lopez helped compile a book of volunteers able to translate in a total of 52 languages for non-English-speaking people in emergencies. He will pass on his chair duties to his daughter, Raquel Perez-Lopez, a 1996 Virginia Wesleyan graduate.
