Texan appointed
director of Dare
Tourist Bureau
A Lubbock, Texas, city executive has been named director of the Dare County Tourist Bureau.
Carolyn McCormick, most recently the managing director of culture and leisure services for Lubbock, was named to succeed Alvah Ward, who retired earlier this year.
Tourist Bureau Chairman Renee Cahoon made the announcement Friday.
In her Texas post, McCormick's responsibilities included oversight of Lubbock's civic center, auditorium/coliseum, libraries, parks and recreation, golf courses and a fine arts center.
Previously, she served as deputy director of tourism and film development for Indiana, and two stints as director of convention and visitors bureaus.
McCormick, a Chicago native, is married to Mark Somma, a political science professor at California State University in Fresno.
They are the parents of two daughters.
She will begin her new duties Nov. 24.
EPA to remove hazards
from Whalehead Beach
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will begin a Superfund hazardous substance removal at Whalehead Beach in Currituck County in December, the EPA said Friday.
The Atlantic Research Co. made rocket fuel at the site 20 years ago, and beryllium residue has been detected, the EPA reported.
The removal will include excavation and temporary on-site storage of 200 cubic yards of contaminated soil. The project is expected to be completed in January, the EPA said. The EPA said Atlantic Research removed some material from the site in 1984, but sampling done in July 1996 confirmed elevated levels of beryllium. KEYWORDS: HAZARDOUS WASTE SUPERFUND
