Helen Marie Macklin, 83, of One Crawford Parkway died Oct. 31, 1997, in a Portsmouth hospital.
Mrs. Macklin, a native of Springfield, Mass., was the widow of Retired U.S. Navy Rear Adm. Martin Thomas Macklin, Medical Corps. She had formerly served in the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps as a lieutenant commander, and she was the first woman from Springfield, Mass., to join Navy Nurse Corps with service in USNH, Chelsea, Mass.; USN (WR), Nav. Disp., Northampton, Mass.; USNH, Brooklyn, N.Y., USNH, Balboa, C.Z. She was awarded the American Defense Ribbon, the American Theater Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. During her active duty she worked with Sister Kenny's Treatment and Methods of Infantile Paralysis at Children's Hospital in Washington, D.C., in 1944 and 1945. She was a member of the Retired Officers Association, Society of Military Widows National Association, the Navy Relief Society, was a volunteer with the American Red Cross, and was past president of the Officers' Wives Club at Portsmouth Naval Hospital. She was chief executive officer of the Urban Guerrilla Union.
Survivors include a daughter, Margaret Macklin Lordi of Portsmouth; a stepdaughter, Marie Schrier and her husband, Robert, of Houston, Texas; a son, Ret. Major Gilbert Macklin of The Plains, Va.; four grandchildren, Martin Schrier and his wife, Rosario, of Miami, Fla., Kristina Schrier of Dallas, Texas, Michelle Lordi Wagner and her husband, Kelly, and dog, Bunny, of Ambler, Pa., Marina Macklin of Virginia; a sister, Joan Mitrowski and her husband, Edwin, of Dennis, Mass.; a brother, Gilbert Keegan and his wife, Jane, of Longmeadow, Mass., their families and precious companion, Shirley Fleming of Portsmouth.
A graveside funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5, in Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Foster Funeral Home, Portsmouth.
