INJURY ENDED THE SEASON EARLY FOR PLAYER-OF-THE YEAR MILLER

Kevin Miller's shot at a Group AAA state championship was ruined in a situation a golfer should never find himself in - making a tackle in a football game.

As one of the area's top punters and the No. 2 leader in kick scoring, the Salem senior injured making a game-saving tackle the week before the state golf tournament - ending his chance at bettering the second-place finish he had in a playoff last year.

``I was real disappointed,'' he said at the next football game. ``But things happen.''

Miller was still good enough during the season to win the Beach and Eastern Region titles and also won the coaches selection as the player of the year in the Beach.

Coaches voted Stuart Holland of Cox the coach of the year.

The coaches selected the first, second and honorable mention teams based on average scores in district regular season and tournament play.

Joining Miller on the first team were Ryan Garland and Ryan Roebuck of Cox, Adam Nielsen of Kellam, John Bonds of Princess Anne and Adam Cook of Kempsville.

On second team are Tripp Bartholomew and Patrick Cummings of Cox, Josh Fentress of Kellam, Nathan Porter of First Colonial, and Keith Barry of Salem.

On the honorable mention team are Mike Krop of Cox, Jeff Draude of Salem, Tate Wilkerson of Kellam, Keith Henley and Chris Horan of First Colonial, Pat Kelly of Kempsville, Hunter Gallagher of Princess Anne and Dave Marquette of Ocean Lakes. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
