The Rev. James W. Wetherington Sr., 78, of the 800 block of Pineview Lane died Saturday, Nov. 1, 1997, in Chesapeake.
The Rev. Wetherington was born in Kinston, N.C., and was the son of the late James Arthur and Virginia Dare Holton Wetherington. He was also predeceased by his first wife, Mary L. Wetherington. He was the founding minister of Pleasant Grove Community Church in Chesapeake, where he served as pastor for the past 28 years. Prior to that he served as pastor of Waters Road Baptist Church. He also served as chaplain with the Disabled American Veterans and was an Army veteran of World War II and a Purple Heart recipient.
Survivors include his wife, Mary G. Wetherington; his three daughters, Louise Kosmicki of Virginia Beach, Shelby Noble of Warrensburg, Ill., and Peggy Sumrall of Chesapeake; his son, James W. Wetherington Jr., also of Chesapeake; a sister, Naomi Ingram of Kinston, N.C.; a brother, Leland Wetherington of Virginia; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at Oman Funeral Home, Great Bridge, from 7 to 9 p.m. today. A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Pleasant Grove Community Church, 818 Waters Road, Chesapeake. The Rev. Tom Mitchell will officiate. Burial will follow in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens. Memorial donations may be made to Pleasant Grove Community Church, c/o Mary G. Wetherington, 849 Pineview Lane, Chesapeake, Va. 23320.
