This 1940 photograph of the intersection of Bank Street and City
Hall Avenue, looking east, records a whole slice of old Norfolk that
has gone, All of the area on the left on the picture is part of the
acreage that will be included in the MacArthur Center mall. Notable
among the no-longer-standing buildings to the left is the former
VEPCO downtown Norfolk plant. The brick chimneyed houe beyond it
still housed a blacksmith's shop until a few years ago. Notably
absent today on the right-hand side of the picture are the former
office of the Clerk of the Norfolk Corporation Court and the north
end of the City Jail. At that time a few of the elms on the Court
House (now the MacArthur memorial) lawn were still standing. Also of
interest are the vintage automobiles. The crooked line of City Hall
Avenue follows the creek bed of Town Back Creek that formerly
extended to Church Street.
