RICHARDSON PROMOTED TO HUMAN RESOURCES ADMINISTRATOR: Goodman Segar Hogan Hoffler promoted Wendy Richardson to human resources administrator. She will be responsible for evaluating staffing levels and needs, employee recruitment, new employee orientation, employee training and development as well as administering compensation, benefits and other personnel programs. She was the assistant to the chief executive officer with the company.
GLENN & SADLER HAS NEW MARKETING TEAM: Glenn & Sadler, a Norfolk-based architectural and engineering firm, has selected a new marketing team. Cynthia W. Hall was named director of marketing, Shannon McLeod will serve as cal assistant director of marketing and Mary Carlson will serve as marketing assistant. Hall has more than 11 years of experience in the architectural/engineering industry. She was formerly with Moseley Harris & McClintock and Clark Nexsen. McLeod was formerly the assistant director of communications for the Virginia Municipal League and Carlson was previously with The Design Collaborative, Architects and Michael Baker Corp.
NORFOLK SOUTHERN STARTS NEW SERVICE FROM DECATUR, ILL.: Norfolk Southern Corp. announced Monday that it began a new intermodal service out of Decatur, Ill. With the opening of a new terminal to handle containerized freight from the Decatur area, Norfolk Southern will provide service to the East Coast ports of Hampton Roads, Charleston, S.C., and Jacksonville, Fla. It will also offer Dectaur-area shippers connections to the port of Montreal through a Detroit interchange Canadian Pacific Railway and to West Coast ports through its gateways in Kansas City and Chicago. The new terminal and service can handle double-stack containers, which allows the railroad to ship containers more efficiently. The new terminal will be operated by Pacific Rail Services.
VIRGINIA
JEFFERSON MERGER WITH WACHOVIA COMPLETED: Wachovia Corp. said it completed its acquisition of Jefferson Bankshares Inc. in Charlottesville at the close of business Friday. Wachovia, based in Winston-Salem, N.C., said it expects to complete its pending acquisition of another Virginia banking company, Richmond-based Central Fidelity Banks Inc., in mid-December. Jefferson National Bank and Central Fidelity National Bank will continue to operate as separate banks until March 20, when they are to be folded into Wachovia Bank.
UKROP'S, FIRST MARKET BANK OPEN JOINT VENTURE: Ukrop's Super Markets Inc. and First Market Bank, FSB opened the nation's first in-store bank branches that are co-owned by both the bank and the supermarket. The first seven branches opened today. Six will be in the Richmond area, and one will be in Fredericksburg. Three additional branches will open Dec. 4, with at least another eight opening in 1998, in and around Richmond. First Market at Ukrop's will be the first U.S. in-store bank in which both the bank and the supermarket share the risks and rewards.
