DRUM IN PLENTIFUL SUPPLY, WEEKEND ANGLERS FIND

Nice-sized drum were landed from piers on Hatteras Island during the weekend.

Rodanthe Pier reported five drum weighing as much as 43 pounds decked Friday night. Several big drum were taken Saturday along with a few small sea mullet.

Nine drum weighing between 40 and 50 pounds were caught from the end of the pier Saturday night. Sunday's fishing was slow, with skates taken.

Anglers on Avon Pier landed seven drum, a 20-pound striped bass and plenty of sea mullet Saturday. The mullet were taken on shrimp and squid.

Five drum were caught Saturday night and several more were taken Sunday morning. A few keeper stripers also were decked. A few sea mullet, spot and trout were taken Sunday afternoon.

A few sea mullet and spot were landed on Frisco Pier during the weekend.

North of Oregon Inlet, Outer Banks Pier reported lots of small bluefish and a few throwback puppy drum taken Saturday. Sunday's fishing was slow.

Little action was reported on Jennette's Pier throughout the weekend.

Fishermen on Nags Head Pier caught plenty of small bluefish, a few trout and a few nice mullet Saturday. Fishing was slow Sunday, with a few small trout, mullet and bluefish taken.

A few one-pound mullet and small bluefish were caught from Avalon Pier Saturday morning. Little action was reported during the afternoon. Fair numbers of 10- to 12-inch mullet were taken on bloodworms and squid off and on Sunday. Kitty Hawk Pier reported a few small gray trout, bluefish, small puppy drum and sea mullet landed Saturday. Only a few throwback puppy drum were decked Sunday.

Surfcasters along the northernbeaches caught scattered keeper puppy drum, small bluefish and some nice speckled trout during the weekend. The water was stirred up so much of the action was on cut bait.

Puppy drum, a few sea mullet, small bluefish and scattered trout were beached by surf fishermen from Rodanthe to Buxton Saturday. Scattered sea mullet were landed Sunday.

Anglers at Cape Point caught a few flounder, keeper stripers, puppy drum and blues Saturday. Several big drum were hauled in Sunday morning and scattered bluefish and puppy drum were landed during the rest of the day.

Lots of bluefish, scattered flounder and a few black drum were caught at Hatteras Inlet Saturday. Bluefish and keeper puppy drum were landed in the same area Saturday night. Rough seas kept action to a minimum Sunday.

Yellowfin tuna fishing was good off Oregon Inlet Saturday. A few king mackerel also were landed.

No offshore action was reported along the Dare coast Sunday.

Striped bass were plentiful in the Manns Harbor area throughout the weekend. Striper fishing should be consistently good in the sound now that cooler weather has arrived.

The water temperature was 64 degrees Sunday at the Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck and 72 degrees Monday at Frisco Pier on Hatteras Island. ILLUSTRATION: Color Photo
