Virginia H. Wellman, 90, formerly of Portsmouth, died Monday, Nov. 3, 1997, at the Mayflower Home in Grinnell, where she had been a resident since September of 1993.
The daughter of James F. and Mollie R. Welborn Hartman, she was born Aug. 22, 1907, in Danville, Va. She later moved to Salisbury, N.C., where she was raised and educated. She was married to Sidney B. Wellman on Aug. 22, 1927, in North Carolina; the couple lived in Salisbury before moving to Portsmouth in 1939. She was employed as an office supervisor at the Norfolk Naval Hospital. She was a member of the Eastern Star and the Cradock Baptist Church. She moved to Grinnell in 1988.
She is survived by a daughter, Mary V. Grey of Grinnell, and two grandchildren, Nathan W. Grey of Grinnell and Celia V. Grey of Iowa City. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in Cradock Baptist Church, Portsmouth. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Chesapeake. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association and/or the Cradock Baptist Church. Snellings Funeral Home, George Washington Hwy. Chapel, is handling arrangements. KEYWORDS: DEATH OBITUARY
