The lower level of the terminal at the Norfolk International Airport was evacuated briefly on Tuesday night when a suspicious package was found near a car rental agency.
The package was destroyed with a detonation device by members of the Virginia State Police bomb squad, said Tammy Van Dame, spokeswoman for the State Police.
The package, a cardboard box wrapped with twine, was not dangerous. It contained drug paraphernalia, Van Dame said.
``You have to treat everything like it has the potential to do harm,'' she said.
The State Police were called at about 4:15 p.m. and were at the airport for 30 minutes.
A portion of the upper level of the terminal was cordoned off while the package was being destroyed. The incident resulted in delays for both arriving and departing passengers. KEYWORDS: AIRPORT SUSPICIOUS PACKAGE
