WEEKLY BRIEFING

IN GENERAL

VETERANS DAY: A musical salute to veterans will be presented by the New Horizon Performing Arts Group at 11 a.m. Sunday in the main chapel of the Hampton VA Medical Center. Representatives from area veterans' organizations will also participate. At 10 a.m. Tuesday, a traditional Veterans Day program to honor hospitalized veterans will be held at the Spanish-American War Veterans Cemetery, on the Hampton University side of the VA hospital. The Women Veterans of America, Chapter 3; Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 3219; Marine Corps, 4th Supply Battalion; and guests from Fort Monroe, Fort Eustis and Langley Air Force Base will participate. The program will end at the flagpole on the waterfront side of the campus. Transportation from the cemetery to the flagpole will be provided.

PULLER MEMORIAL: A service in honor of the late Lt. Gen. Lewis B. ``Chesty'' Puller will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Christ Church in Christchurch, Va., approximately 4 miles west of Saluda on Route 33. The service is sponsored by the Old Dominion Chapter of the First Marine Division Association.

MARINE CEREMONY: The location has been changed for next Thursday's celebration of the Marine Corps birthday. The 7:30 a.m. ceremony will be held in the Portsmouth Naval Medical Center Building, 215 auditorium. Maj. Gen. Michael P. Delong, deputy commanding general for the Atlantic Fleet Marine Force, will speak. Medals will be presented to two hospital corpsmen.

TOYS FOR TOTS: Opening night of the play ``Annie'' on Saturday, Nov. 15, at Founders Inn will benefit the Marine Corps Reserve's Toys for Tots program. Tickets are $30 for the play, which begins at 8 p.m., or $50 for dinner and the play. The Marine Forces Reserve Band will entertain during show interludes. Donations of new toys will be accepted. For tickets, call 424-5511 and ask for the box office. Also, entries are still being accepted for the Toys for Tots 5K run to begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, at the CBN Studio Headquarters Building near Regent University. SHIP VISITS: Two ships will be open from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, and an aircraft carrier will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday for tours. This weekend, the guided-missile fast frigate Carr will be at Norfolk Naval Station (visitors should enter through Gate 2) and the dock landing ship Tortuga will be at Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base (visitors should enter through Gate 1). On Tuesday, the aircraft carrier Enterprise will be at Norfolk Naval Station. Visitors should enter through Gate 2. For updated information, call 444-7637.

COMINGS AND GOING

Cmdr. Edward E. Butler Jr. will relieve Cmdr. Terrance A. Cush as commanding officer of Tactical Air Control Squadron 21. Butler has been executive officer since February 1996. Cush's next duty station will be the Naval Leadership Training Unit at Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base. The change of command ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 21, at the Snug Harbor Club.

Capt. Young Chang Ha, the first Korean-American to become an active-duty Navy chaplain, will retire Friday following 24 years of naval service. Ha, a native of Korea, came to America in 1959 as a student. He is a minister of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), and was assigned for the past two years to Chapel by the Sea at the Dam Neck Fleet Combat Training Center.

Cmdr. David W. Tungett has relieved Cmdr. David N. Blake as commanding officer of Beachmaster Unit 2 at Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base. Tungett was previously assistant chief of staff for plans and exercises on the commander's staff of Carrier Group 2. Blake's next assignment is director of the Fleet Support Information Warfare Center.
